In late June, the Olathe Republican Party held its annual picnic at Mahaffie Farmstead in Olathe. A straw poll was taken for the 3rd District Congressional race and Patricia Lightner came out the victor, capturing 41% of the vote. The next closest candidate had just 18%.

Responding to the results, Lightner said, "I'm pleased that my message of liberty resonated with those at the picnic. I think Olathe Republicans realize that we need a new kind of candidate with a new kind of strategy for 2010 in order to defeat Dennis Moore."
